Kajaks Athletes

Wow! Kajaks Athletes Perform at the 2007 BC High School Championships

Kajaks athletes, Sabrina Nettey and sister Christabel had outstanding performances at the BCHS Championships. However all Kajaks athletes had great performances and I was beginning to wonder if the BCHS organizing committee had enough medals and ribbons to go around for the rest of the athletes. Every time I turned around during a medal presentation a Kajaks athlete was on or near the top of the podium.

Sabrina Nettey was voted the Most Inspirational Performer of the 2007 BCHS Championships. Sabrina earned gold medals in the 100m, 200m, Long Jump and anchored her school's 4X100 relay team along with her sister Christabel.

Other outstanding performances by Kajaks athletes were achieved by gold medallist Heather Warwick and Evan Dunfee in Race Walk. Evan also set a new BCHS meet record in the men's 1500m race walk.

Jordan Mara's silver in the 1500m and gold in the 800m are a great send off for this impressive young athlete heading to Arizona on a scholarship.

Trey Henderson was a triple medallist with gold medals in the hammer, shot put and a bronze medal in the men's discus. Trey is another Kajaks athlete heading south not for track but on a football scholarship.

Christabel Nettey was also a triple medallist with silver in long jump and the 100m and a gold medal on her school's 4 X 100m relay. Christabel was also well on her way to winning the gold medal in the 100mh but had a bad fall over a hurdle. Christabel was at least 1 hurdle ahead of the rest of the pack when she fell.

Double medallist Angus Taylor a World Youth qualifier in men's discus also won gold in discus and silver in the hammer throw.

Ryan Chester also World Youth qualifier was a gold medallist in the men's 400m hurdles.

The biggest upset of the meet was Kajaks Emma Kimoto winning the women's high jump with a jump of 1.73m. Emma's new personal best was also a qualifying jump for the Canadian World Youth team. Emma also participated in the triple jump were she finished a respectable 4th place.

Other Kajaks members with outstanding performances:

  • Gabrielle Payne, last year's winner in the high jump, finishing a respectable 4th considering she was jumping with a knee injury
  • Andrew Nathan with an impressive showing in the men’s 100m finals finishing in 6th place
  • Jessie Padrinao finishing in 5th in the hammer and 6th in discus
  • James Lee 8th in men's discus
  • Trevor Dueckman 6th in men's hammer
  • Brittany Imlach finished in 6th place with great field in the 800m run
  • Regine Yngreso a newcomer to Kajaks and the hammer and discus finished a respectable 11th and 13th in the discus
  • Paul Hegele and Spencer Jackson both Kajaks athletes competed head to head in the men's 1500m where Spencer finished in 7th place and Paul just missed qualifying for the finals

Grades 8 and 9 athletes participated in the championships and Kajaks had fine representation there too —

  • Haley Stewart participated in the 100m and 200m and finished with a bronze medal in the long jump.
  • Raven Yngreso took part in long jump and won a silver medal on her schools 4 X 100 relay team.
  • Alex Dumont received a silver medal in the men's discus event.
  • Tanner O'showy competed in the men's 100m and 200m where he finished in a respectable 7th place in the 200m.

Complete results can be found at http://bcsscctfa.bc.ca.

We are all extremely proud of our young athletes and look forward to seeing them develop into successful young men and women both on the track and in all of their future endeavors. Congratulations and keep up the good work — your "Kajaks Family" is behind you all the way.

Performances of Kajaks Athletes at the 2006 BC Provincial High School Championships

Once again Kajaks athletes' performances were outstanding this year, including our grades 8 & 9 athletes. In 2006, Kajaks athletes stood on the podium in almost every field event. Kajaks race walkers had stellar performances as did our sprinters and middle distance runners. In spite of their youth, this year we had more young athletes standing on the podium than ever before.

For the past 4 years our Kajaks middle distance runners have been absent from the podium. This year we have revived our middle distance program with Jordan Mara winning the gold medal, followed by Mike Buikema capturing the bronze in men's 800m. Connor Baldwinson received the silver in the grade 8 & 9 invitational in the 1500m. Other young Kajaks middle distance athletes with strong finishes in the 1500m were Alex Green (10th), Brittany Imlach (11th), Paul Hegele (12th) and Spencer Jackson; and Linda Stutz in the 800m. Kajaks' youngest athlete in the invitational was Bal Gurjot who finished 27th overall in the men's 1500m. Bal is only an 8th grader and is to be commended for his inspiring performance.

Coach Mike Murray and his group of sprinters and long jumpers also had successful performances. Paulina Kisielewska took gold medals in both the women's 100 and 200 metres while grade 9 sensation Christabal Nettey captured the silver medal behind Paulina in the 100 metres. Leo Murray won the gold medal in long jump and also finished 7th in the men's 100m. Michelle VanRuyven finished 5th in the women's long jump while Christabal finished 22nd. Emerson Murray had a strong performance in the grades 8 & 9 invitational winning the gold medal in the long jump and finishing 5th in the 100m.

Race-walkers Evan Dunfee and Heather Warwick are two of Kajaks' young up and coming performers whose names we will hear for the next two years whenever BC high school rack-walk comes up. Heather Warwick, in spite of walking with a fibreglass cast on her right arm, still managed to win the gold medal with no other competitor even close to her. Heather's focus on her training for race-walk paid dividends in this year's BCHSC. Evan Dunfee also had a great performance in men's race-walk, capturing the silver medal in his event. Both Heather and Evan are only in grade 10.

Coach Sarah McDiarmid with her high flying jumpers had some awesome performances. Grade 11 student Gabrielle Payne with her gold medal performance had no other jumper even close to her 1.70m jump. There were 5 high jumpers who finished with the same height of 1.60m for 2nd place. But when the dust cleared grade nine Emma Kimoto finished 4th. Rounding out the top 8 at the BCHSC was Janet Wong finishing 7th.

Byron Jack, who did most of the announcing at the BCHSC, could not be with his athletes most of the time. He had former Kajaks long and triple jumper Andrea Engleman take over the coaching duties for his athletes. Both triple jumpers finished in the top 10 with Aretha Munro placing 6th and Ekaterina Daviel finishing 10th in women's triple. In men's triple jump Elliot Svob finished in 6th place with a mark of 12.80m. It should be noted that 6th was only centimetres from third. In women's long jump Ekaterina Daviel finished 8th while grade nine Emma Kimoto finished 14th.

In the throwing events there were some surprises. Janet Wong, who was ranked 6th going into the javelin competition, ended up receiving the bronze medal.

Kris Burleigh, also ranked 6th, came away with a bronze medal in men's javelin. Kris also competed in the discus where he finished in 5th place out of 26 throwers. Kris is also one of our younger athletes who is in the 10th grade. Williston Wong, who never practices the javelin, still came away finishing in 7th position. What a surprise this was to all the competitors. Williston also competed in the hammer where he finished 4th, and placed 12th in discus.

Another young sensation was Angus Taylor. Only in grade 10, Angus was a triple medallist at this year's BCHSC, capturing a silver medal in hammer and 2 bronze medals in discus and shot put. Trey Henderson was this year's BCHSC double gold medallist in hammer and discus. His performances in both events were far above all the other competitors in his field. Trey is only in grade 11.

Newcomer Lara ter Laak proved herself this year. This was Lara's first year competing in women's hammer and she came away with the silver medal. Lara is also a double medallist in this year's BCHSC taking home the gold medal in women's discus.

Another newcomer to Kajaks is Jessica Padrinao. She is only in grade 9, but came up with some impressive performances. Jessica managed to finish in the top ten in both hammer and discus. In the women's hammer out of 23 competitors she finished 7th and in discus out of 17 competitors she finished 9th.

To see all our of our Kajaks and BCHSC results go to www.bcsscctfa.bc.ca or www.bcathletics.org. With as many wonderful young athletes as we have I fear I may have missed someone. So many of them did so well. If I have missed any of your athlete(s) please let me know.

Performances of Kajaks Athletes at the 2005 BC Provincial High School Championships

This year was a fantastic year for our Kajaks race walk athletes taking home medals in both male and female categories.

Young Heather Warwick took the silver medal in her event, Evan Dunfee won a bronze medal, and Janet Wong placed 4th.

Because of their ages we should see more of them in the next three to four years at the BC high school championships.

Beside race-walk our field event athletes did extremely well.

Starting with throws:

Chelsea Payne not only won two gold medals but also received a bronze medal in the women's hammer. Her gold medals came in shot put and discus, but she also achieved a personal best in the discus throw. Chelsea is also a repeat gold medallist from last year's shot put.

Tyrell Mara also won the gold medal and was a repeat gold medallist in the men's discus throw from last year. Tyrell also achieved a personal best in the discus throw.

Joe Eppele won two medals: gold in the men's hammer and silver in the men's shot put.

Angus Taylor (only in grade 9) won his first medal at the BC high school championships, receiving a bronze medal in men's hammer.

Like our young race-walkers he too will be heard from in the next 4 years. Angus also finished 6th in men's discus.

Williston Wong also performed well in men's hammer finishing 7th, and 4th in the men's discus. Willis is also one of our up-coming athletes.

Kris Burleigh (another grade 9 athlete) made it to the BC high school championships in men's javelin and we hope to see big performances from him in the future.

Janet Wong not only competed in race-walk but also threw javelin and finished 10th.

Jumps:

Leo Murray won the gold medal in long jump, however he did not enter the high jump this year but had he done so, he most likely would have received another medal in this event.

Michelle Van Ruyven finished 8th in the women's long jump. She was not having a good day with her foot placement; if she had been, she most likely was capable of medalling in this event.

Parveen Dosanjh finished a respectable 12th place.

When you look at the amount of girls (27) participating in the long jump we did all right.

Ekaterina Daviel in women's triple jump finished with a respectable 8th place. She was unlucky to foul on her best jump, and is also battling injury, one reason she scratched from long jump.

Janessa Chin-Aleong also in triple jump finished in 9th.

Aretha Munro, another Kajaks triple jumper, finished in 12th place.

Again when you consider that they were 28 triple jumpers in this event, our triple jumpers performed extremely well, although they did not win any medals.

Gabrielle Payne, one of our young high jumpers in grade 10, finished respectably in 5th place. Gabrielle tied for 4th but because she had missed a jump earlier in the competition, she had to settle for 5th place.

Sprints:

Looking at our young sprint group, Kajaks again performed extremely well.

Michelle Van Ruyven ran a great qualifying time finishing 3rd overall against 29 women 100m sprinters. In the final she finished in 4th. In her 200m events Michelle finished in 7th place.

Leo Murray, like Michelle, ran a great qualifying time to finish 2nd out of 32 sprinters in the 100m. He also picked up a bronze medal in the 100m finishing in 3rd place.

Janessa Chin-Aleong, as a senior, had one of her better performances in the 200m, finishing 3rd and picking up a bronze medal. What a great finish to end her high school career.

Other Kajaks sprinters who did not make it out of the qualifying rounds were Yik Wah Penner in the 100 and 200m. Thanks to basketball he suffered an elbow injury, but still gave it his best effort. Parveen Dosanjh also did not make it out of the qualifying rounds along with Gabrielle Payne and Collette Johns in the 400m. However because of their young ages I am sure we will see then in the future.

Distance:

As in the past our Kajaks distance group again performed with stellar results with a group of young runners.

Starting with August Griffin, her performance in the 3000m placed her a respectable 7th place in the finals out of 26 runners. She then competed in the 1500m and again she placed 6th in finals. Kajaks can again look forward to seeing August in many more years to come.

Britanny Imlach again another young and up and coming runner finished in 7th in the qualifying round and finished in 10th place in the finals.

Alisa Dalhuisen ran a great final in the 1500m steeplechase finishing in 11th place out of 22 runners.

Jordan Mara like his older brother Tyrell is a fierce competitor.

Jordan finished with the 4th fastest time in the qualifying rounds and finished in 4th place in the finals.

Grace Ling finished 8th in the 1500m Grade 8/9 category.

When you look at the amount of distance runners in all the events you will notice that our young group of Kajaks runners can hold their own in all the distance events.

To see all the results go to the BC HIGH SCHOOL website www.bcsscctfa.bc.ca.

Two of our young hammer throwers, Trey Henderson and Angus Taylor, are still JD athletes, as are Brittany Imlach, Gabrielle Payne, Evan Dunfee and Heather Warwick. All others are in grades 10 and 11.

Congratulations to all the coaches and athletes for a successful championship meet and we look forward to even greater success the rest of the year.

Kajaks Athletes Report – July 8, 2003

May was a very successful month for Kajaks athletes. We started off the month with a newcomer to Kajaks, Novelle Murray winning the Discus Throw at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships in her first year competing with the University of Hawaii. Moving on—Jennifer Padrinao won the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association (NAIA) Championships and set a new meet record in the Hammer Throw. Jennifer attends SFU.

Our high school athletes did extremely well with newcomer Yvonne Mensah voted as the Outstanding Female Athlete at the BC High School Championships. Yvonne set a couple of BC High School records in both the 100m and 200m. The 200m record she set was a long standing record that held by former Kajaks athlete Camille Nöel. Yvonne still was not finished and continued on to take the gold in the 100mh making her a triple gold medal winner in the BC High School Track & Field Championships. This fall she will be attending the University of Illinois on a full scholarship.

Another athlete who was successful at this year's BC High School Championships was Catrina Chisholm. Catrina won double gold in the Hammer and Discus Throw. She also set a new BC High School record in the Hammer breaking the old record by over 3 metres. The previous record was held by another Kajaks athlete Jennifer Padrinao. Catrina will also be heading south this fall where she will be attending the University of Pennsylvania on a full scholarship.

Other Kajaks athletes who had great performances at the High School Championships were Adelle Johns finishing 2nd in the 100mh... Breanne Watson's 2nd in High Jump... Pat Smith 2nd in Men's Hammer... Ben Park 2nd in Men's Javelin. Our younger athletes all were very impressive with Tyrell Mara 3rd in Men's Discus... Chelsea Payne 3rd in Women's Shot Put... Leo Murray 5th in Men's High Jump... Kimmy Taylor 6th in both 1500m and 3000m, Michelle Van Ruyven 5th in the Long Jump and Ekaterina Daviel 4th in the Triple Jump.

Jeff Schiebler, our outstanding distance runner, continued his reign as the number one 10,000m runner in Canada. At this year's Canadian 10,000m Championships he was the first Canadian to cross the finish line, again establishing himself as the number one 10,000m runner. Alison Rendell also had a very impressive run in the Canadian Women's 10,000m Championships finishing 6th.

At the BC Junior and Senior Championships Kajaks again showed we are still one of the most productive clubs here in British Columbia. Our Senior David Milne finished 1st in the 1500m... Sarah McDiarmid 1st in high jump and Sarah is also our high jump coach... Carol Stevenson 1st in women's hammer followed by Jennifer Padrinao 2nd and Caroline Hay in 3rd ... 4th through 7th also Kajaks... Mark Ramos 1st in Long Jump and Andrea Engelmann 1st in Women's Triple Jump and Signi MacNeill 1st in Women's Javelin... Marcie Klassen finished 4th in Women's 1500m run.

Kajaks Junior athletes also had a great showing with Kol Henrikson 1st in the 800m... followed by Sam Pawluk 1st in the 1500m... Yvonne Mensah 1st in 100 and 200m and 100mh... Catrina Chisholm 1st in Women's Hammer and 3rd in Women's Discus... Novelle Murray 1st in Women's Discus and Shot Put... Pat smith 2nd in Men's Hammer ....Ben Park 3rd in Men's Javelin.

Our Juvenile athletes participated in the Junior division of the championships with Janessa Chin Aleong finishing 3rd Women's Triple Jump... Adelle Johns 2nd in 100mh... Chelsea Payne 3rd in Women's Shot Put and Kimmy Taylor finishing 6th in the Women's 1500m.

Six of our Junior athletes were selected to the BC Junior team to represent BC at the Canadian Junior Championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Of the six athletes, 4 came home with medals. Sam Pawluk – gold in 5000m, Kol Henrikson – gold in the 800m and both of them will represent Canada in the Pan Am Junior Championships in Barbados... Novelle Murray – gold in Women's Discus and Catrina Chisholm 3rd in Women's Hammer.

Yvonne Mensah suffered an injury in the finals of the 100m where she was leading all of the competitors up until the 60m mark when she pulled up with a hamstring injury. She was favoured to win all 3 events but her injury kept her from continuing on to the 100mh and 200m race. Prior to the injury she led all the 100m heats by a large margin.
