Sunday, 26 November 2000
Ryan Hayden won the 2000 Junior Men Canadian Cross-Country Championships, yesterday, 25 November, at Centennial Park, Etobicoke, Ontario. Ryan with other Kajaks Juniors: Simon Holmes (32nd), Mark Lister (34th) and Chris Durkin (42nd), finished second in the Junior Men team competition.

Wednesday, 22nd November 2000
Ryan Hayden finished 29th at the 2000 NCAA Men's Division I Cross Country Championships, Monday, 20 November, at Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa.
He ran the 10km in a 30:59.2 (a 39 seconds improvement over his time on the same course, last 18 October), the second runner of the Villanova University team, which finished 6th.
He was the fastest "true" Freshman (1st year at university).
Congratulations, Ryan, on a very successful Cross-Country season.


Monday, 13 November 2000
Ryan Hayden finished 9th at the 2000 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Cross Country Championships Saturday, 11 November, at Penn State University.
He ran the 10km in a blazing 30:40.14, making him the second runner of the Villanova University team, which finished 2nd out of 25 universities.
He will go with the Villanova University team at the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championships at the Iowa State University, Monday, 20 November 2000.

Congratulations to Herb Phillips who won the 2000 Haney to Harrison 100 km ultra in 8:07:09, more than 46 minutes ahead of the second runner.

Congratulations to the Kajaks Team Zoom: they won the 19th Annual Haney to Harrison 100 km (62 Miles) relay, Saturday November 4, 2000. Several members of the team are current or former members of the Kajaks.
Of the 8 members of the team, 5 were the fastest in their leg.
The team in order of running was composed of: Ahmed Krama, Graeme Fell, Norm Tinkham, Shane Bilodeau, Oliver Utting, Dave Milne, Randy Moody and Scott Kent.

We now have the results of the 2000 BC High School Cross-Country Championships that took place Saturday, 04 November 2000, at Beaver Lake, near Victoria.
Females: Gaelle Banini: 7th, Kasia Orzechowski: 20th, Ashley Doty: 27th.
Males: Sam Pawluk: 3rd, Mark Lister: 5th, Graeme Wells: 7th, Nick Sebastian: 11th, Chris Dalhuisen: 12th, Calen Nixon: 39th, Allen Wootton: 75th, Mark Wilkie: 78th, Saad Muradagha: 97th, Louis Chan: 133rd.

The Kajaks athletes that ran in the High School Richmond/Burnaby/New Westminster Cross-Country Zone Meet, qualifying for the BC High School Cross-Country Championships (Victoria, 04 November 2000) did well.

Ryan Hayden, who is now a Freshman at Villanova University, in Pennsylvania, has finished 34th out of 380 runners, at the Pre NCAA Championships NCAA Race, at Iowa State University, last week-end. He ran the 10,000m in 31:38.
He is also ranked 10th junior in the world by the International Amateur Athletic Association (IAAF) in the 1500m.
Congratulations, Ryan.

At the 2000 Canadian Track & Field Championships, in Victoria, Shane Niemi won the silver medal in the 200m.
BC won 4 out of six gold medals in the middle and long distance events:
Diane Cummins, 800m Women,
Zack Whitmarsh, 800m Men,
Leah Pells, 1500m Women,
Tina Connelly, 5000m Women.
Other BC medals in these events: 1 silver (Jeff Schiebler, 5000m) and 2 bronze (Marty Cluff, 800m, and Ryan Hayden, 1500m).

At the Canada Dry 2000 Canadian Track & Field Championships and Olympic Trials, in Victoria, Caroline Wittrin won the bronze medal in the hammer throw, with a throw of 58.30m.
Robyn Lyons won the gold medal, with a new Canadian Championships record of 62.70m, and Michelle Fournier won the silver wit a throw of 60.26m.

Finally, we have the Results of Friday and Saturday of the Canada Dry Canadian Track & Field Championships and Olympic Trials, in Victoria.

At the Canadian Legion Camp, the Canadian Juvenile Championships, Marcel Hewamudalige won the gold medal in the 1500m, in just 3:57.35.
Here are the comments of Ian Fallas, who did not watch the race: "apparently, Hewamudalige pulled an "El Guerrouj", complete with kisses, on the homestretch".
Nataniel Grams won the silver medal in the long jump, with 1.90m.
Graeme Wells finished 4th in the 1500m and was part of the team that won the gold medal in the 4x400m.

We still don't have the official results of the 2000 Canada Dry Canadian Track & Field Championships and Olympic Trials, but here are some partial results:
Shane Niemi won the gold medal in the 400m, in a time of 45.79 (unfortunately, it seems that it is not enough for him to go to Sydney, because he did not meet the qualification time (45.50) which is 2/100th of a second better than his own Canadian record! (45.52).
Ryan Hayden won the bronze medal in the 1500m, in 3:49.16. Kevin Sullivan won the gold, and Scott MacDonald the silver. Ahmed Krama, although qualified, did not compete in the final, because of injury.
Other BC Athletes: Leah Pells won the gold medal in 4:13.27, in the 1500m.


Friday, 11 August 2000
We don't have the official results of the first day of the 2000 Canada Dry Canadian Track & Field Championships and Olympic Trials, but several Kajaks athletes did very well:
Shane Niemi won his heat in the 400m.
Allen Klassen, Ahmed Krama amd Ryan Hayden qualified for the 1500m final that will take place Saturday at 14:55.
Jeff Schiebler finished second in the 5000m. This was a very fast 5000m, around 13:25, a new meet record. The previous meet record dated from 1987, 13:37.68 (Paul McCloy, Ottawa).
Other BC Athletes: Tina Connelly won the 5000m, Dylan Armstrong won the hammer throw.


Saturday, 5 August 2000
Tonight, at Swangard Stadium, in Burnaby, the Pre Olympic Trials High Performance Meet took place, starting at 7:30 PM. The results and some photos of the meet can be found here.
Robyn Meagher, from Victoria, finshed first in the 1500m, in 4:24.6. Finishing respectively second and third, Stephanie Hirtle, from Salmon Arm, and Kirsty Smith, from West Vancouver, had huge PB.
In the 1500m Men "A", Jeff Schiebler passed Ryan Hayden in the last metre. They both had a time of 3:42.8, another PB for Ryan, and a new BC Junior record. Ahmed Krama finished third, 0.7 second behind the leaders. A very interesting race.

Last Sunday, 30 July 2000, at Minoru Park, the first Annual Kajaks "Throws Only" Meet took place.

Tuesday, 1st August 2000
At the Hershey Harriers All Comers Meet, tonight at Burnaby Central High School, Leah Pells won the 800m Women elite in 2:04.9, and Ryan Hayden won the 800m Men elite, in 1:49.1, a new PB.
Herb Phillips barely missed the Canadian record in his age group (60-64) in the 10,000m. The current record is 37:17.4, Herb ran in 37:18.3!

Ian Fallas, from time to time, establishes the Canadian Rankings for the 1500m, from performances established this year.
In the first 20, there are two Kajaks Women: Cindy O'Krane (5th) with 4:16.03 and Nikki Knapp (18th) with 4:24.38, and three Kajaks Men: Ahmed Krama (8th) in 3:42.3h, Ryan Hayden (11th) in 3:44.2h, and Allan Klassen (14th) in 3:44.90.

The results of the BC Junior Development Pentathlon Championships, Saturday 22 July 2000, in Maple Ridge are now available: Girls and Boys.
Some of the Kajaks Girls did very well:
11 years girls: Jodi-Ann Robinson, Gabrielle Payne and Katherine Kalnin finished first, second and third respectively!
12 years girls: Aretha Munro finished second.
14 years girls: Adelle Johns finished first.

The results of the Hershey Harriers All Comers Meet, tonight at Burnaby Central High school are here.
Ahmed Krama improved his best performance of the year, and Ryan Hayden had another lifetime PB, in a race rabbited by Jeff Schiebler.
Diane Palmason (62) ran the mile in 6:17.9, equivalent to her world record of last May at the UBC-Kajaks Track Classic.

Stephanie Bennett, fifth in the 1500m, in 4:32.42.
Ryan Hayden, gold medallist in the 1500m, in 3:50.49.
Marcel Hewamudalige, bronze medallist in the 5,000m, in 14:47.73.
Jim Heys, gold medallist in the 10,000m Race Walk in 49:45.81.
Jennifer Padrinao, fourth in the Hammer, with a throw of 47.58m.
Mark Ramos, silver medallist in the Long Jump with a jump of 7.21m.

Gaëlle Banini finished fifth at the French Juvenile Championships in the 800m in Évry-Bondoufle, yesterday Sunday 16 July 2000.
She wants to go back next year to do better.

Today, at MacGill International, in Montréal, Ahmed Krama ran the 1500m in 3:44.45.
This is his best time this year.

Shane Niemi ran 45.68 to finish third in the 400m on Thursday, July 6th in the third meet of the Athletics Canada High Altitude Series, in Flagstaff, Arizona.
He finished behind two U.S. athletes, Ja Warren Hooker (44.95) and Kempa Busby (45.31).
This improves his Canadian leading mark, and ties his second best performance ever.
He will run again on Saturday morning in an attempt to get the Olympic Standard of 45.50, which will also break his Canadian record of 45.52.

Kirk Dillabaugh has ranked the Canadian athletes, according to their best performance of the season, across events using the Mercier Scoring Tables (cut-off 850 pts).
In his list of 83 athletes, there are 5 Kajaks: Jeff Schiebler, Jennifer Joyce, Shane Niemi, Laurier Primeau and Caroline Wittrin.

Several Kajaks athletes (or ex-athletes) did very well in the BC Junior Championships, last weekend, in Kelowna during the Jack Brow Meet:
Marcel Hewamudalige won the 5000m in a new meet record of 15:11.67, below the funding standard.
Gaëlle Banini won the 800m in 2:12.40, a new PB.
Carol Stevenson won the discus with a throw of 43.81m, the shot put with a throw of 11.70m, and the hammer with a throw of 49.74m!
Jim Heyes (ex-Kajaks) won the 10,000m race walk in 47:47.39.
Ryan Hayden won the 1500m in 3:56.10.

Shane Niemi just returned from Germany where he won all three 400m races he was entered in. He was first in Rehlingen (June 11th), first in Rhede (June 23), and first in Nuremberg (June 25). Despite poor weather he still ran 46.20 in Nuremberg, and is currently ranked first in the country. On Tuesday July 4th, he will be leaving for Flagstaff in Arizona, where he will participate in the Flagstaff High Altitude Series.

Oliver Utting, of the Kajaks, finished fifth at the ScotiaBank Vancouver Half Marathon (21.1km), today, in a time of 1:08.07.
The winner, Julius Gwako, from Kenya, had a time of 1:04:46.
Graeme Fell, now a Master, was sixth in 1:08:36, Herb Philips, 61, was 35th in 1:21:27, and George Agnew, 53, finished in a time of 1:57:18.

At the Prefontaine Classic, in Eugene, Oregon, on June 24th, Dr. Doug Clement, who founded the Kajaks Track & Field Club, will be one of the "greatest student athletes" of Bill Bowerman, the famous University of Oregon Track Coach, who will pay tribute to their coach, the "professor of competitive response" who passed away last Christmas eve.
The Prefontaine Classic will be broadcast live for an hour on CBS and also "Webcast" on the Nike web site for several hours.

Last Friday, 2 June 1000, some "former athletes and current friends" of Dr. Doug Clement participated in the "Thank You for Coaching Doug Clement Dinner/Cruise".
During the cruise, Lynn Williams and Sue Lee sang "Ode to Our Coach" that many former athletes of Dr. Doug Clement will appreciate.

Saturday, 3 June 2000, Jeff Schiebler won the 10,000m Canadian Championships, that was part of the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic 2000. His time was 28:14.30.

Kajaks athletes did very well at the 2000 BC Secondary School Track & Field Championships, Friday 2 and Saturday 3 June 2000, at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.
Gold medallists include:

  • Gaëlle Banini (800m)
  • Jennifer Padrinao (HT)
  • Ryan Hayden (800m and 1500m)
  • Matt Love (3000m)
  • Marcel Hewamudalige (2000m Steeple)
  • Mark Ramos (LJ and TJ)
Jennifer Padrinao established a new record in the hammer throw, with a throw of 51.72m. Previous record established in 1999 by Carol Stevenson, also from the Kajaks, was 51.26m.
Ryan Hayden established a new record in the 1500m, with a time of 3:50.16. Previous record, established in 1975, was 3:53.20. He barely missed the 800m record (1:50.70) when he won his heat Friday, with a time of 1:51.20.
Other medallists include Graeme Wells, Nathaniel Grams, Lara Peters, Breanne Watson and Irwin Wong-Sing.

Last Wednesday, at the UBC-Kajaks Track Classic, Diane Palmason of the Kajaks set a new Canadian and World record in the Mile for the Women 60-64 age group.
Her time was 6:18.12. The Canadian record was 6:42.13 and the World record was 6:24.8.

Yesterday, 31 May 2000, at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships, in Durham, North Carolina, Jennifer Joyce finished 4th in the hammer throw, with a throw of 62.22m.

The Kajaks Women Hammer Throwers are on top of their game!
Jennifer Joyce finished 2nd at the recent PAC 10 Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, with a throw of 62.86m.
It is less than a meter short of Caroline Wittrin's Canadian record at 63.47m.

Carol Stevenson is just finishing her first year at California State Usiverity, Northridge (CSUN), an NCAA Division I university.
She recently won the Big Sky Conference Championship in hammer with a throw of 54.50m.

Jennifer is one of the best throwers in Canada. She is the Canadian junior record holder in hammer and is currently ranked 6th in hammer in the NCAA Division I, with a throw of 61.94m.

Margaret Butler, a long time member of the Kajaks is in her fourth year (the senior year) at the University of Washington in Seattle.
She had, until recently, the Canadian Junior Record in 5000m, with a time of 16:45.6.

She will compete in the 1500m at the UBC-Kajaks Track Classic, on May 31st.

Jeff Schiebler finished 4th, yesterday 03 May, in the 5000m of the Shizuoka International Track Meet in Japan, with a time of 13:25.04.
His time is better than the A Standard for selection to the Olympic Games in Sydney (13:28:00).

Following his fourth place at the Vancouver Sun Run on 17 April 2000, Kajaks.org did an interview of Ahmed Krama.
Ahmed Krama was born in Algeria in 1973. He has competed internationally for several years. In March 1999, he arrived in Vancouver. Since then, he has become a Landed Immigrant. He has joined the Kajaks and he trains under the direction of Marek Jedrzejek.

On Sunday 23 April 2000, in Kobe, Japan, Jeff Schiebler finished 2nd in the 10,000m in a time of 27:53.85, a little more than 8 seconds over his Canadian record, that he achieved also in Kobe, two years ago, almost to the day.
The winner, Simon Maina, from Kenya had a time of 27:18.95.
Jeff's comments: "I was left with a choice of going with Maina or staying back with the Japanese. I went with Maina, but he got away from about 3km until the end. So I ran from 3km until the finish completely on my own. Very boring race in windy conditions".

Kevin Sullivan, a world class miler, from Bramptford, Ontario, has indicated that he will run the 800m at the UBC-Kajaks Track Classic at Minoru Park, on Wednesday, 31 May 2000.

Ahmed Krama, from the Kajaks, finished 4th and top Canadian at the Vancouver Sun Run, Sunday 16 April 2000, with a time of 29:44.
James Koskie of Kenya won the race in a time of 27:36.

Ryan Hayden finished 91th and first Canadian, at the World Junior Cros-Country Championships, today in Vilamoura, Portugal. The Canadian team finished 19th. 159 athletes finished the race, and 27th teams are ranked. You can look at the results here.
