We had a very successful meet tonight at Clement Track.
The Mexican athletes won the two main events: Dulce Rodriguez, the winner of last year 1500m, won the 3000m in 9:02.34, 0.28 seconds from Claire Taylor 1999 meet record; David Galvain, the winner of last year 3000m, won it again this year in 7:51.0h, improving on his time of last year by 1.7 seconds.
In the Masters Mile, Roger Davies, of the Calgary Road Runners, established a new Canadian record for his age group (65-69) with a time of 5:32.75. And Maureen de Sainte Croix, from the Kajaks, established a new Canadian record for her age group (45-49) with a outstanding time of 5:16.66. The former record of 5:27.27 was held by teammate, Avril Douglas, who was not able to run in the event.
Julia Howard, of Mercury Athletics, established a new Newfoundland Junior record in the 400m with a time of 57.82.

The final entry list for today's Review Kajaks International Track Classic has just been posted.
Late entries: two Kenyan athletes, Ben Kapsoiya and Enock Kiptoo Keter, are going to compete in the 3000m. A third Kenyan, Jackson Koech, who won the 5000m last Friday at the Victoria International Track Classic, may help to set the pace.
Ben Kapsoiya, 27, is a miler with a best performance of 3:53.3; his personal best in the 3000m is 8:02.0. He ran last Friday in the Miracle Mile in Victoria (4:05.79).
Enock Kiptoo Keter, 20, is more a long distance runner, from 5000m to the half marathon. He has won several half marathon in 2000. His best time in the 5000m is 13:42.10.
With Alejandro Suarez, from Mexico, and Ahmed Krama, from Vancouver, the men 3000m is going to be an exciting race.

Garrett Collier and Jennifer Joyce placed both third in their repective hammer competitions at the PAC 10 Track & field Championships this past week-end (Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 May) at Edwards Stadium, at the University of California, Berkeley, the university they both attend.
Garrett had a throw of 61.42m and Jennifer a throw of 61.96m. For Jennifer, she is guaranteed to go to the NCAA Division I championships; she is currently ranked 7th on the performance list. For Garrett, that put him in the 28th place in the performance list. The NCAA Championships will take place at the University of Oregon, in Eugene, May 30th to June 2nd.
Jennifer also finished 8th in the discus, with a throw of 46.02m.


Friday, 18 May 2001
Roger Davies, of the Calgary Roadrunners, is going to compete in the Masters Mile at the Review Kajaks International Track Classic, Tuesday 29 May.
He is hoping he will break the Canadian Masters Record for his age group (65-69). The current record is 5:45.7, by Kurt Gelbhaar, from Ontario, established in 1989. He recently ran an indoor mile in 5:43.

Last Saturday, 12 May 2001, at the 60th Modesto Relays, in Modesto, California, Shane Niemi won the Men's 400 Meter Run Invitational, in a time of 45.92, just 4 tenths of a second above his own Canadian record of 45.52.
It looks like Shane is in excellent form this year!

At the same Modesto Relays, Jennifer Joyce won the Women's Hammer Throw Open/Inv, with a throw of 59.21m. Jennifer is currently in 7th position on the 2001 NCAA Div. I performance list.

Jeff Schiebler establishes a new Canadian record in the 10,000m
Yesterday night, at the Cardinal Invitational Meet, at Stanford University, in California, in a race where a new American record and a new Asian record were also established, Jeff Schiebler improved his own previous Canadian record in the 10,000m.
He finished 6th in a time of 27:36.01 in the fastest 10,000m ever run on American soil.
That's an improvement of almost 10 seconds over the previous record of 27:45.75 that he established in Kobe, Japan, 26 April 1998.

Yesterday, at the 2000 Richmond Sports Awards, several members of our club received awards. They are:

  • Female Master Athlete of the Year: Avril Douglas
  • Female High School Athlete of the Year: Breanne Watson
  • Female University Athlete of the Year: Jennifer Joyce
  • Male University Athlete of the Year: Ryan Hayden
Other nominees were Gaelle Banini and Sarah Swann (Female High School), Stephanie Bennett (Female University), Richard Collier and Mike O'Connor (Coach of the Year).

Today, at the 29th IAAF World Cross-Country Championships, in Ostend, Belgium, Ryan Hayden finished 27th and first Canadian in the 8,000m Junior Men race, in a time of 27:07.
He was immediately followed by Nathan Brannen of Ontario (28th, 27:08) and then by Simon Bairu from Saskatchewan (30th, 27:15). The fourth Canadian runner was Joseph Dionne from Ontario (86th, 28:33).
The team finished 6th (out of 25 teams) behind Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, United States and Morocco.
The race was won by Kenenisa Bekele, from Ethiopia, in a time of 25:04. The complete results can be found here.

We have several members of the Kajaks that are now in Ostend for the 2001 IAAF World Cross-Country Championships.
Marek Jedrzejek is the head coach. Jeff Schiebler will compete in the Senior Men Short Course (4km) race and Ryan Hayden in the Junior Men race. Mike O'Connor is also there as the coach of Ryan.
Other BC Athletes include Stephanie Hirtle of Salmon Arm, Mark Bomba and Peter Cradle of Vancouver, Graham Cocksedge and Jim Finlayson of Victoria, Leah Pells and Tina Connelly of Coquitlam, Robyn Meagher of Victoria and Aundrea Bertoia of Vancouver. Jerry Tighe is the team manager.

Two Kajaks athletes named captains of a NCAA div. I Track & Field team
Garrett Collier and Jennifer Joyce have been named captains of their NCAA Division I university Track and Field team, University of California at Berkeley, near San Francisco. Jennifer finished 4th in the hammer competition at the 2000 NCAA Championships.

In the Mile final of the 2001 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, last Sunday, 11 March 2001, Ryan Hayden finished 7th in a personal best of 4:00.30!

Today, at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Ryan Hayden ran the Mile in 4:03.51 in his heat.
This makes him the 10th (and last!) qualifier for the final, which will take place tomorrow at 06:15PM.
Not bad for his first year ever of running indoor!

Shane Niemi victorious in Montreal, next stop Portugal

Shane Niemi won the 300m at the McGill Open Track and Field Meet held in Montreal this past weekend. In the process Shane recorded the #2 all time Canadian performance of 33.42, narrowly missing Alexander Marchand's Canadian record of 33.40.

Shane's next race will be over 400m in Lisbon, Portugal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships.
Shane was one of eight athletes selected to represent Canada at this event. Also representing Canada will be Kwaku Boateng, Mark Boswell, Kevin Sullivan, Nicholas Macrozonaris, Adrian Woodley, Foy Williams, and Ladonna Antoine.

Ryan Hayden got the gold medal in the Mile run at the 2001 Big East Indoor Track & Field Championships, last Saturday, 17 March 2001, at Syracuse University, in Syracuse, NY.
His time was 4:10.08. Next, it's the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Boston, Massachusetts, March 3rd and 4th, then the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, March 9th and 10th.
Good luck Ryan. You are doing well for your first indoor season.

Saturday, 12 February 2001, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, at the Tyson Invitational-Golden Spike Indoor Meet, Ryan Hayden finished 7th overall and 2nd student-athlete in the Mile.
His time was 4:00.78, just over 4 minutes, which is one of his long time goals.

His time is better than what he needed to go automatically to the NCAA Div. I Championships (4:01.00), on the same track of the University of Arkansas, in Fayetteville, in exactly four weeks.

Saturday, 27 January 2001, Ryan Hayden ran a 3000m indoor in 8:07.30.
He was the fifth finisher of the race, at the Penn State National Indoor Meet, at Pennsylvania State Universtity, in University Park, PA.
This performance makes him eligible to be selected for the Canadian team competing in the 4000m ("Short Course") Senior Men Long Race, at the 2001 World Cross Country Championships in Dublin, Ireland, 24-25 March 2001.
No doubt Mike O'Connor, a native of Ireland, who coaches him in Canada, will accompany him in Dublin.

Today, at the Cargill Indoor Track & Field Extravaganza, at the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Shane Niemi, of the Kajaks, won the 200m in 21.69.
Shane also finished second in the 300m, in 33.67.

The Kajaks Ice-Breaker 8k Race took place this morning, starting and finishing at the Steveston Community Center, in Richmond.

Norm Tinkham, of Vancouver, finished first, in 25:24, followed 3 seconds later by Ben Kapsoiya, of Surrey. Chris Winter, born in 1986, finished third in 25:47.
Nancy Tinari, of Coquitlam, was the first woman, in 27:43. Cari Rampersad, of Burnaby was second in 28:24, and Lori Durward, of Vancouver, was third in 28:41.
275 runners finished the race.
