December 7/06 - Jerry Ziak of Kajaks had an excellent run at the Canadian Cross Country Championships (Dec 2nd, Jericho Beach) capturing the bronze medal and leading the Kajaks Senior Men's team to a second place finish behind Toronto Olympic club. The race was won by Simon Bairu, his 5th consecutive win at this event. The other Kajaks team members were Mike Tighe (20th), Mark Bomba (28th), Fred Setterington (35th), and Jamie Epp (40th). The course was mostly snow-covered, making for slippery conditions, but the weather co-operated with a panoramic view of the North Shore Mountains.
In the Junior Women's race, Brittany Imlach came in 53rd, and in the Junior Men's race Jordan Mara finished 77th and Alex Green 114th. Competing in the Masters' races were Christine Blanchette who finished 21st (9th in Women 40-44 category), Steve Hosford coming in 50th (3rd M55-59), Jake Madderom 58th (2nd M60-64) and Willi Ribi 60th (10th M50-54).
Two of our JDs ran in the community race, Gurjeet Bal and Daniel Ribi, who were the 2nd and 4th Under-15 finishers.

Board Meeting schedule and AGM date are listed on the Club Info page.

November 29/06 - KAJAKS TEAM GOING FOR GOLD. Is the Kajaks men's cross country team going to win the Club Championships title at the Canadian Cross Country Championships this weekend Dec 2nd, at Jericho Beach? In addition to the championship title for individuals, there is always the very prestigious CLUB TEAM TITLE. Senior men and women team competitions usually draw the most attention. Kajaks Track and Field Club has a long tradition of success, and has won this title numerous times. Leading the Kajaks squad is the former Canadian Cross Country Champion MARK BOMBA (above right photo). Another Kajak, former NAIA champion JERRY ZIAK has had an outstanding season and won a bronze medal at the Canadian Road Race Championships. MIKE TIGHE has had an excellent cross country season so far and is focusing on this Championships race throughout the fall. Returning to form from injuries is the former CIAU Champion and National Cross Country team member JAMIE EPP. Completing the team is Kajaks' newest member and a former U of A standout, FRED SETTERINGTON. In the last minute, Victoria's team convinced the Olympic Champion Simon Whitfield to strengthen their team. Is that good enough to win? As well there is a very strong team from Toronto. Which club team is the best in Canada? We will find out on Saturday at Jericho Beach. www.bcathletics.org/main/xcnationals06.htm

November 6/06 - Jordan Mara and Brittany Imlach were the top finishers from Kajaks at the BC High School Cross Country Provincial championships (Nov. 4th at Beaver Lake Park, Victoria) which took place during pouring rain and high winds.
Jordan came in a very impressive 6th place in the boys' race, and Brittany (the Independent Schools Zone winner) came in 14th place in the girls' race. Jordan Mara, the BC High School and Legion Games champion at 800m, showed he also has the endurance for the much longer 6.4km course.
Evan Dunfee also had an excellent race, coming in 15th place. Evan, who is better known as a Race Walker (Junior National Racewalk team member & BC Record holder), has been running very well all season, and was the easy winner of his Zone (Rmd/Bby/New West). He should be a strong contender next year.
Other top finishers were Spencer Jackson (45th), Paul Hegele (52nd) and Linda Stutz (54th).

October 28/06 - Congratulations to Mark Bomba of Kajaks who won the 25th Annual Richmond Flatlands Road Race on October 15th. Despite the wet weather, he ran a fast time of 33:16 (in the 35-39 age category). Christine Blanchette (40-44 category) also turned in a very good performance of 42:22.

At the 2006 BC Cross Country Championships in Victoria (Oct 21st), Kajaks Senior Men dominated their event, with Ryan Hayden winning in a very close finish, and leading the Kajaks to victory in the team event. The Kajaks team of Ryan Hayden (1st), Mark Bomba (4th), Mike Tighe (6th), Fred Setterington (9th) and Jamie Epp (15th) beat the second placed team by 9 points.
Kirsty Smith won the Senior Women's event by a margin of 6 seconds.
Excellent performances in the JD age-groups were by Connor Baldwinson finishing 2nd (15yr boys) and David Ling placing 3rd (14yr boys). In the Juvenile Women's race Brittany Imlach finished in 7th place. Jordan Mara placed 8th, Evan Dunfee 11th, and Paul Hegele 15th in the Juvenile Mens' event in a large field of 28 athletes.
In the Master Mens' event, Steve Hosford finished 1st in his age category (M55-59) and Jake Madderom 4th (M60-64). Results can be found at www.bcathletics.org.

October 23/06 - Initial details about the Australia-Hawaii trip, from Byron Jack:

The trip will take place during Spring Break (this upcoming, spring 2007). We will actually leave on Wednesday, March 14th (evening) so students would have to miss two days of school. We will be in Australia until Friday, March 23rd. At that time we will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii. Because of the time difference we will actually arrive there early on Friday, March 23rd. We will compete in a meet at the University of Hawaii on Saturday, March 24th. We will return home on Sunday, March 25th.

The cost of the flight, ground travel and two nights hotel in Hawaii will be $2500. We will be billeted in Australia (which cuts down the cost of accommodation and meals). I would suggest that participants bring about $200 for food when we are not at a billet's house as well as some spending money.

I am currently working on the details for our stay in Australia. We have three possible destinations, including Sydney (for sure), New Castle (probable) and Adelaide (possible). I have connections in each of these cities and they are currently helping me to make billeting and competition arrangements. I will forward more details once I have them.

I have reserved 30 seats with Quantas Airways. The payment schedule will be as follows:

  • A $500 deposit will be due by November 10th
  • $750 due December 10th
  • $750 due January 10th
  • $500 due February 10th

If this schedule does not work, other arrangements can be made.
Payment can also be in one, two or three payments.
Participants are asked to get their own medical and travel insurance as many will have this already. This will add slightly to the cost of the trip.

The track club will not specifically be doing any fundraising for this trip. Athletes may be asked to take part in some fundraising activities that are being done by Lord Byng School.

This trip is also open to athletes in different schools and different clubs.
The trip is open to all high school age students and I am open to taking some older athletes as well.

I am really looking forward to this trip and I look forward to the participation by many of you on the trip. Please feel free to email me or phone me with your questions.
