Kajaks News Archives 2008December 11/08: Updated 2009 club membership application and instructions November 28/08: Kajaks racewalker Evan Dunfee has been awarded one of Athletics Canada's National awards, the Fred Begley Memorial Trophy. This is awarded to the best Race-Walk, Cross-Country or 0ff-track Athlete of the year. Evan won this award because of his performance at the 2008 World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He finished 10th in a personal best time of 42:56.82 in the 10km Racewalk event. Evan has been a Kajaks club member for many years, graduating from the JD program. He also took the time to help coach our JD athletes this past season. Many congratulations to our 2008 National Award winner, Evan Dunfee. November 28/08: Two of our athletes have been selected to the BC Cross Country team to compete in Guelph, Ontario at the National Championships (November 29th). They are Rachel Ruus and Steve Hosford, competing in the Senior Women and Masters Men categories respectively. November 19/08: Women's Club Records and All-Time Top 10 updated November 14/08: Race Info posted for 2009 Ice-Breaker 8k, taking place February 1st. Registration is open now! November 10/08: Results are now posted (PDF file) for the BC Elementary & Junior High Schools Cross Country Meet November 1/08: Rachel Ruus finished 2nd in the TransCanada Run with the Champions Timex Series Finale 10k road race (Ottawa, Oct 18th) with a time of 36:44.6, and helped the BC Team to a second place finish. She also won the Women's division of the Royal Victoria 8k road race on October 12th (Victoria, BC) with a time of 28:39. Way to go, Rachel! At the BC Cross Country Championships (Stanley Park, October 25th) Rachel Ruus was our only female athlete, coming in 7th in the Senior Women's 6km race in a time of 23:18.4. In the Masters Men 8K race, Steve Hosford M55 finished 15th in 32:29.9; Fred Pawluk M60 25th in 35:53.4; and George Agnew M65 finished in 55:19.4. Jeff Schiebler M35, a former long-time Kajaks international athlete, finished in 2nd place in 28:18.4. Evan Dunfee, competing for UBC, finished in 10th place in the Junior Men's 7km race in a time of 23.53.1, and Gurjot Bal (Juvenile Men) put in a solid run over 7km to finish in 14th place in 26:04.1. Two of our JD athletes were also racing, both running 2km. They were Christopher Gaio (M12) finishing 5th in 6:29.1, and Connor Forsythe (M11) 14th in 7:09.9. Christopher Gaio took 2nd place overall in the JD Lower Mainland Cross Country Series with 78 points, and Connor Forsythe finished 8th with 55 points. October 10/08: Congratulations to Rachel Ruus who has been selected to the BC Team competing at the 2008 Trans Canada Canadian 10k Road Running Championships in Ottawa, October 18th. September 15/08: Two of our Masters Athletes competed at the BC Seniors Games in Prince George, September 10-13th, bringing home a number of gold medals with some fine performances. 5:21.77, 2nd 400m 1:09.54 The Timex BC Road Running Series finished with the final race (Kajaks Labour Day race) and several of our athletes won series awards. Rachel Ruus finished 2nd overall, and also won the F30-34 age group. Steve Hosford finished 18th overall, winning the M55-59 age group, and Daniel Ribi finished 3rd in the 19 & Under category. Our Kajaks racewalkers were the first Canadians across the finish line at the CAN-USA Junior Racewalking Dual Meet, Victoria, BC Aug 16th. Congratulations to Heather and Evan. Heather Warwick 3rd 5000m 26:59.8 September 3/08: The beginning of school marks the start of JD Cross Country Season. Practices will begin on Monday, September 8 and will end on Wednesday, October 22, culminating with the BC Cross Country Championships October 25. Monday/Wednesday practices start at 5:30pm (sharp) and will end by 6:30pm. Meet in the south end of the grandstands at Minoru track. August 31/08: Results are posted for the Labour Day Weekend 8k. Photos are now posted (Sep 2). August 13/08: Kajaks' Debra Head (15 years old) competed for BC at the 2008 North American Indigenous Games in Cowichan, BC and won 3 medals in all of her events she entered. Debra ended up winning a gold medal in high jump, a silver medal in the 100m sprint and a bronze in the 400m sprint. On behalf of Kajaks and the board of directors our congratulations go out to Debra and her coaches, Byron Jack and Sarah McDiarmid for their hard work. August 12/08: Kajaks sprinters broke records at the Canadian Youth Championships (Sherbrooke, QC Aug 8-10). Christabel Nettey set a new Canadian Youth record in the long jump of 6.21m, beating the previous record of 6.17m set by her sister, Sabrina. This will be the second Canadian Youth record for Christabel, as she already holds the record in 100mH. And 15 year old Shai Davis set a new meet record in the 100m of 11.85, breaking the current National Midget record. Shai's time would have won the 17yr old 100m race. Both Shai and Christabel are coached by Mike Murray. Christabel also won the 100mH in a new meet record of 13.77, finished 3rd in the 100m and also 3rd in the 4x100m relay. Shai Davis went on to win the 200m in 24.82. Shai and Hayley Stewart were half of the winning BC 4 x 100m relay team, breaking the current National Midget record. Hayley also won triple jump, and finished 6th in LJ. Emma Kimoto finished 3rd in the High Jump (17 and under) with an excellent jump of 1.71m, and 9th in TJ. 17 and Under 15 and Under August 8/08: Evan Dunfee and Heather Warwick have been selected to represent Canada in the Canada-USA Junior Race Walking Dual Meet at Victoria, BC (August 16th). Both are coached by Gerry Dragomir. Evan recently finished 10th in Race Walk at the World Youth Games (see picture of Evan in action in the August edition of Athletic Canada's "The Gold Standard"). July 30/08: Kajaks athletes had excellent results at the Canadian Junior Track and Field Championships at Abbotsford (July 25-27). Emmalynne MacCorquodale took gold in Womens' Hammer throw with a toss of 49.55m, while Angus Taylor won gold in Mens' Hammer, throwing 62.09m, and silver in Discus, with a throw of 50.42m. Gurinder Dosanjh took bronze in discus, throwing 48.61m. Christabel Nettey also had an outstanding performance, winning gold in long jump with a 6.06m jump, and bronze in 100mH. Angus Taylor 1st HT 62.09 2nd Discus 50.42 July 30/08: Senior Middle distance runner Graeme Wells continued his fine track season by running some very fast times on his European tour. He completed an 800m in 1:47.64 in Liege, Belgium on July 16th, and a sub-4 minute mile in Dublin, Ireland (July 25th) in a time of 3:58.22. July 28/08: Shai Davis was a double gold medal winner in 100m and 200m at the BC Summer Games held in Kelowna this weekend. (See Province article for interview with Shai: 15-year-old Shai burns up the track). Olivia McNair, Melissa Holyk, and Shai Davis also won gold medals in the 4 x 100m Relay. Hayley Stewart also struck gold in Long Jump and took silver in the 4 x 100m Relay. Nicholas Fyffe took silver in Pentathlon and Aman Kang won silver in Hammer. See full results on JD Page. July 22/08: The BC teams for the 2008 Legion Track and Field
meet have been announced, and four Kajaks athletes have been
selected. In the 15-year old category, sprinter Shai Davis
(100m/200m) and jumper Hayley Stewart (LJ) have been named
to the team, and in the 16-17 year old category are Christabel
Nettey (100m/LJ/100mH) and Emma Kimoto (HJ/TJ). Both
Christabel and Emma competed at the World Youth Games last year. Latest JD results here, from five meets in late June and July. July 19/08: Results from Kajaks Hammer Meet July 14/08: Evan Dunfee of Kajaks walked his way to 10th place in the 10,000M RW in a field of over 30 world-class athletes at the World Junior Championships (Bydgoszcz, Poland on 11th July). Women's events followed by the Men's Events. July 6/08: Congratulations to Evan Dunfee, who has been selected for the 2008 Canadian Junior Athletics Championship team to compete in Poland July 8-13th. He will be competing in the 10000m RW event. Kajaks coach Mike Murray has been appointed as sprints/hurdles coach. Two Kajaks athletes are on the BC Senior track and field team competing at the Canadian track and field Championships in Windsor, Ont July 3-6th. Graeme Wells will be running 1500m and Christabel Nettey will compete in long jump. Our head coach, Richard Collier, is the throws coach for the team. Our Masters athletes were in action at the BC Masters
T&F Championships in Surrey 20-22 June, turning in
impressive results: In Road Running, Ryan Hayden came in 3rd place in the "Chip's not dead yet memorial road race", running a mile (uphill) in 5:07.5, while Rachel Ruus was the first woman to finish in 6:19.1. Jerry Ziak won the Vancouver HBC 10K Run for Canada (July 1st), in a time of 32:30, while Rachel Ruus was the 3rd female finisher in 37:11. See BC Athletics Bulletin for details. June 30/08: Kajaks athletes have had some excellent results in the recent Kajaks International and Harry Jerome meets. Graeme Wells put in some very fast times, winning the 800m Invitational at the Kajaks meet in 1:48.63 and running the 1500m in 3:39.02 coming in 7th place (and incidentally breaking the Kajaks club record). Earlier in the season, he finished 3rd in the Vancouver Sun Run. Other Kajaks athletes taking part in the Series are Rachel Ruus who was the 2nd Female finisher in the Sandcastle 10k; Steve Hosford (M55) first in his category also at the Sandcastle race; and Daniel Ribi, 3rd Under16 at the Longest Day 5k race.

June 4/08: Kajaks JD athletes excel at BC High School Championships May 27/08: Province Article on Evan Dunfee The BC High School Provincial meet is taking place May 30-31 at Swangard. Some of our male athletes who will be competing are Angus Taylor (DT,HT,SP), Ryan Chester (400mH), Evan Dunfee 1500mRW, Niko Monachini (TJ,LJ,HJ), Gurinder Dosanjh (DT), Hosam Shahim (HT), Alex Dumont (DT,HT), James Lee (HT), Emerson Murray (DT,LJ,SP) and Andrew Nathan (100m,200m). Among the female athletes are Christabel Nettey (100m,100mH,LJ), Emma Kimoto (HJ,TJ), Heather Warwick (1500mRW), Jessica Padrinao (HT,DT) and Stephanie Santa Cruz (1500m). Kajaks also have athletes in the Grade 8-9 invitational, including Pauljit Bhandal (DT SP), Hayley Stewart (80mH,LJ) and Shai-Anne Davis (100m,200m). Good luck to all our athletes competing. May 26/08: Results for BC Elementary T&F Championships (May 23-25) May 14/08: JD athletes perform well at Norwesters Elementary and Kajaks HS Meet May 10/08: Results from Kajaks High School Meet are now posted. May 4/08: Kajaks were big winners at this year's Richmond Sports Awards. Racewalker Evan Dunfee was selected as High School Male, and thrower Angus Taylor won Junior Male. Both are in Grade 12 and competed at the World Youth track and field championships in Czechoslovakia last summer. Masters athlete Steve Hosford won the Masters Male for his domination of middle distance running in the M55-59 age group, and Head Coach Richard Collier won for Builder for his work in throws coaching. Some of the outstanding local athletes he coached are Jennifer Joyce, Trey Henderson and Angus Taylor. Kajaks racewalker Heather Warwick, throwers Trey Henderson and Dariusz Slowik, and coach and masters triple jumper Byron Jack were also nominated for awards in various categories.
