December 10/09: 2010 Kajaks Membership Application now available. November 16/09: 2009 Kajaks Awards Winners; 2009 JD Awards Winners


October 31/09: Two of our Kajaks participated in the 2009 World Masters Games held in Sydney Australia October 11-19 in athletics, one of 28 sports offered. Total games competitors exceeded 28,000 of which 10% made up the highly competitive field in athletics. Coach Byron Jack was a competitor in the Long Jump, Pentathlon, 400 metre hurdles and Triple Jump. Treasurer Bob Cheng was a competitor in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 metres as well as the 4 x 400 relay, achieving a silver in the men's 200 - 239 total team age category. This marked the 2nd consecutive World Masters Games that Bob has brought home a medal, he won gold in the men's 200-239 age category 4 x 100 relay at the 2005 Edmonton World Masters Games.

October 8/09: Four of our Junior Development athletes have received 2009 BC Athletics JD Awards. They are:

October 8/09: Two of our Senior athletes were selected to represent Canada for the Francophone Games (Beirut, Set 27-Oct 6th). They are Trey
Henderson
and Chantal Spies (a second-club member). Both train with head coach Richard Collier, who was named as an event coach for the team.

Chantal finished in 8th place in discus with an excellent throw of 48.69m. Unfortunately Trey did not have a legal throw in the hammer event. Full results are on the Athletics Canada website.


October 8/09: Kajaks hosted the track and field portion of the 2009 Senior Games held at Minoru (16-19th September). The road races were held outside the Oval. Our club president, Fred Pawluk, did an excellent job organizing the track and field portion, as did long-time club member and coach George Agnew organizing the road-races. A number of club members volunteered at the event to help make it a success.

A large group our Masters athletes competed in the events. Gwen McFarlan was outstanding, winning her events in record times and racing 1500m, 5km and 10km all within the space of a few days! Avril Douglas, Fred Pawluk, John Winfield and Steve Hosford were also in excellent form, winning all their events.

September 20/09: Results from BC Senior Games Track & Field (Sept 16-19)


September 18/09: Evan Dunfee set a new Kajaks club record of 1:29.13 competing in the 20K Race Walk in Edmonton (Sept 12th). Earlier in the season, he set a new Canadian Junior record of 41.55 for the 10K Race Walk, breaking a record set in 1981.


September 18/09: Kajaks athletes had excellent results at the Canada Games last month (24-28th August in Charlottetown, PEI), competing on the BC team. They brought home 6 medals between them. Angus Taylor won two silver medals in discus and hammer, finishing just ahead of Trey Henderson, who had to settle for the bronze in hammer. Kevin Lim was a member of both 4x100 and 4x400 BC relay teams, winning silver and bronze medals respectively, while Shai Davis helped the 4x100m relay team to take silver in the Womens' event. Our athletes were unlucky not to win more medals, as Emmalynne MacCorquodale, Lara ter Laak, David Skermer and Shai Davis all had 4th place finishes. David also helped the 4x100m team to a place in the final.

This event was for athletes aged 16-24, so Shai at 16 was one of the youngest competitors. Emmalynne and Angus are Juniors.

September 9/09: JD cross country training sessions begin on Wednesday, September 9 at 6:00pm. Meet at the grandstands at the Minoru Track. Training will be on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:00pm, until the light starts to fade, and then we may move the start time to 5:30pm.


August 22/09: Kajaks Hammer thrower Jennifer Joyce (see photo) finished 11th in qualifying group A at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, throwing 67.07m. She did not advance to the final, but she has had a great season, setting a PB of 70.35m in July. Canadian record-holder Sultana Frizell did make the final, finishing 10th with a throw of 70.88m. Evan Dunfee, Heather Warwick

August 21/09: Our racewalkers Evan Dunfee and Heather Warwick were in excellent form at the Canada-USA Junior Dual Racewalk Meet held August 16 in Minneapolis. Heather won the women's event 5K in a personal best time of 26.06, and along with her two teammates (one from Victoria and one from Quebec) tied the U.S. Women. Evan won the Men's 10K event in a time of 44.24 and along with his two teammates (both from Quebec) won the Men's portion of the dual meet. Overall Canada was the winner of the dual meet.

August 13/09: Seven Kajaks athletes are on the Team BC Athletics roster for the 2009 Canada Games (PEI). They are Shai Davis, Trey Henderson, Kevin Lim, Emmalynne MacCorquodale, David Skermer, Angus Taylor, and Lara ter Laak. The athletics portion is scheduled 24-28th August. Athletes must be aged between 16 and 23.

Sprinters Shai and Kevin are coached by Mike Murray, and throwers Trey, Emmalynne, David, Angus and Lara are all coached by Richard Collier.


Sam Kennedy wins hammer throw

August 11/09: Three of our athletes were in action at the Legion Canadian Youth track and field championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec August 8-9th, competing on the BC Teams.

Nick Fyffe, on the 15-year old team, broke the Legion games Triple Jump record with a phenomenal jump of 13.73m. Incidentally, Nick also broke the long-standing BC Midget triple jump record set in 1971 with this jump. Nick also won the long jump with a leap of 6.36m, and was part of the BC 4x100m relay team that finished in 2nd place.

In the 17 and under category, Shai Davis tied for first place in the 200m sprint in a time of 24.38, finished 2nd in 100m in a time of 11.97 and anchored the winning BC 4x100m relay team.

Also in this age category, Sam Kennedy won hammer with a throw of 42.47m (photo by Petranella Daviel), and finished 13th in javelin with a throw of 29.70m.

Nick is coached by Byron Jack, Shai by Mike Murray and Sam by Richard Collier. Congratulations to these athletes and their coaches!


August 4/09: Christabel Nettey wins a silver medal at the PanAm Juniors!

Christabel Nettey jumped 6.05m on Sunday to win a silver medal at the PanAm Junior Track and Field Championships (31st July to 2nd Aug) in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Her jump was only 3cm behind the winner. Way to go, Christabel!

Congratulations also to Emmalynne Macorquodale who just missed a medal, finishing in 4th place in Hammer with a huge throw of 53.18m, and Evan Dunfee who placed 6th in the 10kmRW in a time of 43:27.04. Angus Taylor was also competing in Hammer, but unfortunately his throws were fouls.

July 31/09: Kajaks sprinter Shai Davis is one of only 13 athletes that Athletics Canada has identified for the 2010 World Junior Championships to be held in Moncton. Shai has already achieved standard in both the 100 and 200m sprints! Way to go, Shai. For more info see www.athletics.ca.

Athletics Canada has also named Kajaks Senior Hammer thrower Jennifer Joyce as one of the 2009 IAAF World Championship team to compete in Berlin, August 15-23.

July 28/09: Kajaks athletes excel at 2009 BC JD Championships - Our athletes had a great final meet of the season at the JD Championships hosted by Ocean Athletics in hot sunshine. Many athletes set personal bests.


July 25/09: Four Kajaks athletes have been named to the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships team by Athletics Canada. The team will compete July 31 to August 2 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago.

July 22/09: The BC Junior team was in action in Charlottetown, PEI at the Canadian Junior Championship (17-19th July).

This also was the selection meet for the Pan Am Junior games. Three of our athletes won their events. Christabel Nettey jumped 6.10m to win the Long Jump, Emmalynne MacCorquodale won Hammer with a throw of 51.38m, and Angus Taylor won Hammer with a 64.32m throw. Angus also finished third in Discus. Our other medallists were Joanna Franke-Kuhn (2nd place in Hammer), Shai Davis (3rd in 100m) and Emma Kimoto, who missed selection for the BC Team, placed 3rd in High Jump with a 1.70m jump. Lauren Stuart just missed a medal with a 4th place finish in Discus.

July 14/09: Our athletes shone at the BC Track & Field Championships Jamboree held July 10th-12th in Abbotsford.

In the Senior category, Kajaks male and female athletes dominated the Hammer and Discus events. In Hammer, Jennifer Joyce came in 2nd with a fine throw of 67.34m, and Trey Henderson won the mens' event, throwing 53.96m. Chantel Spies won Discus with a throw of 48.74m, while David Skermer won the mens' event with a 49.57m throw. Lara ter Laak took 2nd place in Discus and 5th in Hammer, throwing 43.60m and 50.34m respectively.

Senior athlete Kevin Lim had two excellent wins in the 100m and 400m sprints, clocking 10.91s and 47.87s respectively. Kajaks jumps coach Byron Jack came in 2nd in the triple jump with a jump of 12.03m.


Angus Taylor: gold in Hammer and Discus, Junior category

In the Junior category, all of our athletes finished in the top three. Our throwers were again dominant, with Emmalynne MacCorquodale, Lauren Stuart and Jessica Padrinao taking the top three places in Hammer. Lauren Stuart went on to win Discus and Shot Put. Angus Taylor took the gold medals in both Hammer and Discus, narrowly beating Gurinder Dosanjh into second place in discus. In jumps, Kevin Lian won triple jump, Christabel Nettey won long jump, and Emma Kimoto finished second in high jump. Racewalkers Heather Warwick and Evan Dunfee were also in action, both winning their 5000mRW events.

In the Youth category, Samantha Kennedy led the charge with a fine throw of 44.57m to win Hammer, and finished 3rd in Javelin. Alex Dumont finished 2nd in Hammer and 3rd in Discus. Mandeep Khatkar finished 2nd in Shot Put. Three of our star athletes were missing from the meet: Shai Davis and Joanna Franke-Kuhn were at the World Youth Games, and Hayley Stewart was unable to compete due to injury.

Nick Fyffe was the stand-out among our 15-year old athletes, leaping 13.15m in Triple Jump and 6.25m in Long Jump to win both events. A full report of our athletes' performances is on the JD & Youth-15 page.

July 14/09: On Day 4 of the IAAF World Youth Championships (Italy) Shai-Anne Davis was 4th in her semi-final for 200m in a time of 24.36 and did not advance to the final.


July 13/09: Kajaks Track & Field Club is proud to join with the City of Richmond and the BC Senior Games Society to host the track & field portion of the 2009 BC Senior Games at Minoru Park in Richmond, BC from September 16 - 19, 2009. Volunteers are urgently required to assist throughout the four days and Kajaks is pleased to provide you with another opportunity to complete your volunteer hour's requirement.

July 10/09: At the IAAF World Youth Championships (Italy) Shai-Anne Davis has advanced to the semi-final of the 200m sprint, by finishing 2nd in her heat with a time of 24.40. In Hammer, Joanna Franke-Kuhn threw 45.68m to finish 16th in her group, and did not advance to the final.


July 7/09: Kajaks Racewalker Evan Dunfee was the Vancouver Sun's male athlete of the week in the back page of the July 4, 2009 edition. See www.vancouversun.com/sports/2010wintergames/Athletes+week/1759177/story.html 

Evan was also featured on the 2009 BCSSA T&F championships video as a racewalk official, recently aired on Shaw Cable (see www.bcsscctfa.bc.ca/).

At the Trevor Craven Memorial Meet July 3-5, Kajaks JDs and Youth-15s brought home a total of 17 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze medals! See Club results here.


July 6/09: Richmond Kajaks Jennifer Joyce had a great meet in Madrid, Spain (July 4th) where she had a World Championship qualifying throw and her personal best of 70.35 metres in women's hammer. Jennifer will now be representing Canada in Berlin at the World Championships (Aug 15-23). Congratulations, Jennifer!


July 3/09:  Two Kajaks athletes have been selected to the Canadian Team for the IAAF World Youth Championships (Italy, July 8-12). Athletics Canada has named Shai-anne Davis for the 200m sprint and Joanne Franke-Kuhn for Hammer. Shai is coached by Mike Murray and Joanne by Richard Collier. Congratulations and good luck, Shai and Joanne.


June 30/09: Kajaks Performances at Canadian National Track & Field Championships

  • Jennifer Joyce wins gold in Women's Hammer competition with a throw of 69.05m her season best for 2009.
  • Evan Dunfee wins gold in men's Junior 10k Race Walk with a time of 41:55, Evan also set a Canadian Junior Race Walk record by 42 seconds.
  • Heather Warwick also a gold medallist in Junior Women 10k Rack Walk with a time of 56:09
  • Chantel Spies second club member finished second in Women's Discus with a throw of 48.38m.
  • All of our young Kajaks athletes were strong competitors finishing in the Top Ten at the Canadian National Championships

June 23/09: BC Athletics have announced the 2009 BC Senior Team for the Canadian Nationals (June 25-28th in Toronto), and five Kajaks athletes have been selected! Trey Henderson, Angus Taylor and former Canadian record-holder Jennifer Joyce are on the team for throws; sprinter and long jumper Christabel Nettey is also selected, as is 16-year-old jumper Hayley Stewart.

Two of our coaches are also travelling with the team. Kajaks Head Coach, Richard Collier, is appointed the team Throws and Head Coach, and Mike Murray is the Sprints/Hurdles coach.

Also competing at the Senior Games will be sprinter Shai Davis, and travelling with the Senior team will be racewalker Evan Dunfee, who will be competing in Toronto.

Kajaks Athletes in the News - The Province:


June 16/09: Meet reports:

Harry Jerome Classic 2009 (June 14th, Burnaby)

Kajaks had four athletes competing in the Invitational events at the Harry Jerome Classic. Commonwealth silver medallist Jennifer Joyce threw 67.55m to finish 2nd in the Hammer, and middle-distance runner Graeme Wells finished 9th in the 800m in a time of 1:53.14. Junior athlete Emma Kimoto was competing once again in High Jump, and finished 4th, clearing 1.66m. Shai Davis (still aged 15) finished 7th in the 100m in a time of 12.02.

Competing in the High School division was Gurjot Bal, who ran the 1500m in 4:33.62.

Review Kajaks International Meet (June 12th at Minoru)

Many of our athletes took advantage of the International competition at the Kajaks International meet in front of a small but enthusiastic crowd.

It was great to see Angus Taylor in action, now back from University in the US. He easily out-threw the high school hammer champion to win Hammer with a throw of 61.48m. He also narrowly won discus by 5cm from fellow-Kajaks Junior Gurinder Dosanjh with a throw of 47.55m (1.75kg).

Kajaks had two medalists in the Senior Discus events, with David Skermer finishing 2nd with a throw of 44.98m (2kg), and Lara ter Laak 3rd with a throw of 41.83m (1kg).

Long-time Kajaks athlete and former Canadian record holder Jennifer Joyce won the hammer event with a throw of 67.22m. Maureen Watson finished 4th in the same event, throwing 47.66m.

Other Senior athletes in action were Kevin Lim, who ran the 400m in 49.05 to finish in 5th place, and Kajaks record-holder Mark Ramos in the Long Jump, finishing 3rd with a jump of 7.15m in his first competition for over a year.

Our Junior-aged racewalkers were also in good form, with Evan Dunfee finishing 2nd in the mixed 5000mRW in a time of 21:12.20, and Heather Warwick was the 2nd female finisher in 26:59.60.

Among the younger athletes taking part were two long jumpers, Hayley Stewart and Olivia McNair. Hayley finished 2nd with a fine jump of 5.16m, and Olivia finished 3rd with a jump of 4.94m.

Last but not least was sprinter Shai Davis, running a spectacular time of 11.82 to finish 5th in the 100m, and then running the 200m in 24.25, also finishing 5th.

June 11/09: Report on the 2009 BC High School Championships, June 5-6th, Burnaby

Kajaks high school athletes were in great form at the BC High School Championships June 5-6th in Burnaby.

Thrower Lauren Smith put in a stellar performance, winning the prestigious "Outstanding Female Performer" award for her triple gold medal performance in Hammer, Shot Put and Discus. The last athlete to achieve this feat was also a Kajaks athlete, Garrett Collier.

Our girls swept the Hammer event, taking all the top four spots. Besides Lauren in 1st place, Joanna Franke-Kuhn (who throws with Kajaks as a second club) took 2nd place, Jessica Padrinao came in 3rd, winning her first high school medal, and 4th place was Sam Kennedy who is only in Grade 10. Sam also finished 10th in Javelin, while Jessica and Joanna finished 5th and 10th in Discus respectively.

Other outstanding performances were also by two Grade 10 athletes: sprinting sensation Shai Davis won both the 100m and 200m Sprints, while jumper Hayley Stewart won Triple Jump and missed the gold in Long Jump by only 1cm! Former gold medalist Emma Kimoto finished 3rd in High Jump.

The boys also put in outstanding performances. Two of our athletes competed in Triple Jump. Kevin Lian won gold, and Christopher Adams finished in 7th spot. Kevin and Hayley gave Kajaks a sweep of the Triple Jump gold medals this year.

Our male throwers were also in excellent form. James Lee took silver in Hammer and 7th place in Discus, and Alex Dumont silver in Discus and 7th in Hammer. Imrose Baga (who throws with Kajaks as a second club) finished in 5th place in Discus.

May 4/09: Gwen McFarlan, winner of the Kajaks Female Masters award, set a world best at yesterday's BMO Vancouver Marathon in the 75-79 age division. Her time was 3:57:26. It appears that her time was faster than males in the same age group!


April 27/09: KAJAKS Jennifer Joyce finished second at the prestigious Penn Relays in Women's Hammer with a throw of  68.37m

IMPORTANT NOTICE OF DATE CHANGE FOR THE INTRODUCTION TO TRACK PROGRAM

The Introduction to Track Program will run for 8 consecutive weeks. The program has a rolling start, earliest sign up date is April 15th and the last day to join is May 3rd.
Program highlights are as follows: (see membership page for forms)

  • This introduction program is available to athletes in Grades 3 – 7 only.
  • The program will run Mondays & Wednesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
  • The program is available to new members only & only available in their first year of membership.
  • Fee includes 2 practices per week with our certified coaching staff & BC Athletics membership.
  • Members (or their parents/guardians) are expected to complete 5 hours of volunteer time during the two month program, preferably at the BCEC Meet May 22 – 24th.
  • Members in this category will have the right to purchase a club singlet to wear at track meets.
  • Members may upgrade to a full membership at any time for an additional fee.

February 9/09: Two of our athletes have won BC Athletics Track and Field Athlete of the Year awards:

Shai-Anne Davis won the Midget 15 Female category. Shai had an outstanding season last year, finishing by breaking the National Midget 100m record at the Canadian Youth Championships with a time of 11.85.

The Junior Male Award went to Evan Dunfee, whose achievements in Race Walking last season included a 10th place finish in the 10,000M RW at the World Junior Championships (Bydgoszcz, Poland). Evan also won an Outstanding Athlete of the Year award from Athletics Canada, and has been nominated for a Sport BC Award.

Angus Taylor was also nominated for Junior Male athlete of the year, and Christabel Nettey was nominated in the Youth Female Athlete category.

Congratulations to all these athletes!
