August 10/10: LITTLE FLOWER'S HAMMER STAR

Grover Covington was mean business. The big Hamilton Tiger-Cat was the CFL's top defensive player in 1988 and still holds the league's career sacks record -- an impressive 157. It happened in just 11 seasons, and might never be topped.

So it's probably no surprise that Grover and his wife Natalie now oversee the athletic accomplishments of 14-year-old daughter Asianna, a student at Vancouver's Little Flower Academy and a rising star in a triumvirate of extraordinarily physical sports: the hammer throw, the discus and shot put.

Asianna, who trains under Richard Collier at Kajaks Track and Field Club in Richmond, has had quite a year -- including four record-setting hammer throws at the recent B.C. Summer Games. Last weekend in Ottawa, the Olympic hopeful won the discus and finished second in shot put at the Legion Canadian Youth Championships.

Kudos to the Covingtons for another generation of sporting excellence.

August 9/10: Kajaks Achieve Podium Results at Canadian Youth Championships 2010

This year we sent 5 athletes to the Canadian Youth Championships in Ottawa and all of them achieved podium results.

Starting with Samantha Kennedy winning the women's U-18 hammer throw for the second straight year to be the Canadian Youth National Champion; next Serana Graf first year with Kajaks landed on the podium with the silver medal in women's U-18 javelin missing the gold medal by only 46cm, then Haley Stewart stepping up on the podium with the bronze medal in women's long jump U-18, followed by Nicholas Fyffe who stood on the podium twice, once with the bronze medal in men's triple jump U-18 and also a sliver medallist as a member of the 4 x 100 men U-18; and last our youngest Kajaks athlete on this years BC Youth Team was Asianna Covington.

Asianna managed to step on the podium twice, once with the silver medal for women's shot put U-16 then on the very next day winning the gold medal in women's discus U-16.

Congratulations to all the Kajaks Youth athletes and coaches -- you have made us proud.

Head Coach

Another up and coming Kajaks race walker Heather Warwick who competed in her first senior national 20k race walk finished in 4th place amongst Canada's best race walkers.

This year's national championship was the last day to qualify for the 2010 Commonwealth games to New Deli India. Evan has now achieved the B standard with his time of 1: 25:57.7h. Evan has been selected to the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India.

Kajaks have had very few athletes or none that has ever won this event at our national championships. Chantel Spies won a gold medal in women's discus beating out the nearest competitors by over a metre.

Yvonne Mensah after a two year absence from injuries has now come back to take the silver medal in the 400mh. Trey Henderson who completed a very long season in the US still managed to finish second in the hammer throw.
