Gordon
Johnson
Head Coach, Kajaks Masters
Gordon began track in 1958 as a sprinter with the Arctic
Club under Jack Harrison (BC Hall of Fame) and later joined the Optimist
Striders under coach John Minichiello (1968 Olympic coach).
He attended UBC in the early 60's and graduated with a
degree in physical education. He began teaching elementary school in
Vancouver in 1966. He competed in the 440 and 880 yards and was a teammate
of the late Harry Jerome in the sprint and 4X440 yard relays.
In 1967, Gordon attended the Canadian Legion Coaching
Clinic in Guelph, Ontario. In 1968, he received certification for coaching
middle-distance runners and began coaching high school athletes for the
"Striders". He coached Rob and Mike Lonergan, Chris White, Al
Dukowski and others.
In 1974, he retired from club coaching to raise three
children (the oldest, Chris, a current BC 800m runner). Gordon joined the
Kajaks Masters in 1988 and participated in road relays and master's track
events.
In 2000, he began coaching masters sprinters and
middle-distance runners with the Kajaks. Some of the athletes he currently
coaches are: John Caruso, Nirmal Khunkhun, Jake Madderom, Alex Jamieson,
Avril Douglas, Gary Kuno, Bob Cheng, Louise Reed, Sharon Hann, and Charlie
Loo.
