2003 Cross Country Season
Kajaks JD athletes had a very successful cross country season.
BC Athletics Cross Country Championships
Five Kajaks JD athletes showed excellent form, finishing in the top
3 in their age groups at the BC Athletics Cross Country
Championships in Coquitlam.
They were:
Amanda de Faye (3rd), Brittany Imlach (2nd), August Griffen
(2nd), Jordan Mara (2nd), Andrew Lee (3rd).
Other Kajaks placings were:
David Ling who just missed a medal in 4th, Paul
Hegele (6th), Evan Dunfee(8th), Kyle Isaman
(19th), Stephanie Santa Cruz (10th), Melisendra
Daviel (11th), Grace Ling (13th).
Three Kajaks Juvenile athletes were also competing. In the
Womens' 16-17 category, Kimmy Taylor finished 8th,
Mary Hein 11th and Nicole Akeroyd 13th.
BC Athletics Cross Country Series
Several athletes took part in the Lower Mainland JD cross country
series which finished with the BC Athletics Championship.
Amanda de Faye and Brittany Imlach finished in 2nd
place, and Evan Dunfee and Melisendra Daviel
finished in 3rd.
David Ling finished in 4th and Grace Ling in 5th.
Melisendra Daviel also won the 16/17 year old category in
the Open/Master cross country series (as the only competitor in
that age group).
Provincial High School Cross Country
A number of Kajaks athletes took part in the BC High School series
of cross country races. The penultimate meet was a qualifying
meet for the Provincial Cross Country championships. Runners
attempted to qualify with their school team or as individuals
if their school had no team. It was more difficult to qualify
as an individual than on a team. Fourteen Kajaks qualified
for the Provincials; Heather Warwick just missed qualifying
for the Provincials as an individual. August Griffen
won every race in the Richmond series, including the Zone
qualifier.
The Provincial Cross Country championships took place at Jericho
Beach Park in Vancouver on November 1st.
There was a huge field of entries for both the girls' and boys'
races: 250 finishers in the girls' race and 275 in the
boys'.
In the girls' race 10 Kajaks athletes were running: 3 Juveniles
and 7 JDs.
Juvenile athletes Kimmy Tailor and Nicole Akeroyd
were part of a very strong Lord Byng team, and Mary
Hein was running for the Kitsilano school team. JDs
Brittany Imlach, Alisa Dalhuisen and Stephanie Santa
Cruz were running as individuals. August Griffen,
Collette Johns, Ekaterina Daviel, Aretha Munro, and
Melisendra Daviel were running as part of two McRoberts
school teams.
August Griffen put in an awesome performance to get a top
ten finish (10th place) and Nicole Akeroyd was right
behind in 12th. Brittany Imlach and Kimmy Taylor came
in 17th and 18th, making 4 Kajak runners in the top 25.
Mary Hein came in 36th. All put in excellent
performances. Kimmy Taylor and Nicole Akeroyd anchored the
Lord Byng team into an impressive 5th place finish.
The other Kajaks placings were Stephanie Santa Cruz (151st),
Collette Johns (155th), Melisendra Daviel (175th), Alisa
Dalhuisen (177th), Ekaterina Daviel (normally a
sprinter!) (215th) and Aretha Munro (250th).
In the boys' race, four Kajaks JDs had qualified as
individuals for their respective schools. Jordan Mara
placed 55th, Andrew Lee 98th,
Paul Hegele 140th and Evan Dunfee 175th.
Congratulations to all who took part in a great cross country
season.
