2004 Track and Field Season

Kajaks Junior Development group had a very successful track season.

Congratulations to Gabrielle Payne and Trey Henderson, 15 year-olds who were selected to the BC team for the Royal Canadian Legion National Track and Field championships in Sudbury, Ontario.

Trey Henderson won the Discus event, finished 5th in Shot Put, and 4th in 4x100m relay. Gabrielle Payne finished 6th in High Jump and 3rd in Sprint Medley Relay.

BC Athletics JD Championships, Kamloops

Highlights of the season were three provincial records set by Kajaks athletes at the JD Championships in July. Trey Henderson (age 15) threw the hammer an awesome 62.78m; Angus Taylor (age 14) threw the hammer 55.61m, and Evan Dunfee (age 14) completed the 1500m Race Walk in a time of 7:15.40.

Angus Taylor also won in discus and shot put, and Trey Henderson won the discus event. Hayley Boyd (age 12) won in Discus, Hammer and Javelin. All gained BC top ten placings in these events.

Other BC all-time top 10 performances were by Heather Warwick (1500m Race Walk), Kris Burleigh (Javelin and Shot Put), Pauljhit Bhandal (Discus), Angus Taylor (Javelin), Jenny Boyd (Hammer) and Melisendra Daviel (Steeplechase).

Kajaks athletes showed great form in all event classes: the throwers were outstanding (see above), also excellent high jump form was shown by Gabrielle Payne, Kris Burleigh, David Ling, Sky Young and Emma Kimoto. Kris Burleigh showed his versatility in both jumps and throws.

The middle distance group were out in force, with excellent races by Brittany Imlach and Jordan Mara, and 3rd place finishes by Evan Dunfee (3000m), Linda Stutz (1500m) and Melisendra Daviel (1500mSC, 3000m). Among the younger athletes, Amanda de Faye showed her excellent form with a 2nd place finish in the 800m, and Jamie Andrews had an excellent win in the 1500m.

BC High School Provincial Championships

The following JD athletes gained top ten placings in the Provincials this year:

  • Evan Dunfee 5th 1500m Race Walk
  • Heather Warwick 9th 1500m Race Walk

BC Summer Games

Kajaks athletes were very successful in the BC Summer Games, which took place July 15th-18th in Abbotsford. Two Kajaks athletes set records for this event:

Trey Henderson set a Summer Games record when he threw 59.67m while winning the Hammer Throw, and Evan Dunfee easily won the 1500m Race Walk while setting a Summer Games record of 7:15.63.

Throwers in particular did extremely well. Trey Henderson also won the Shot Put, and was narrowly beaten into 2nd place in the Discus throw by fellow Kajaks athlete Angus Taylor. Angus also placed second to Trey in the Hammer Throw. Kris Burleigh finished just out of the medals with a 4th place finish in Javelin and a 6th place finish in Discus. He also finished 6th in long jump.

Female throwers were represented by Jenny Boyd and Kayla Dykstra. Jenny finished 5th in Hammer and 8th in Discus. She was part of the winning 4x100m relay team, and finished 11th in the 100m.

Heather Warwick just missed a medal in Race Walk, finishing in 4th place.

2004 Road Running

Congratulations to Melisendra Daviel who won the Women's 19 and Under category of the 2004 Timex BC Road Running Series, competing in 7 races of the series, between 5Km and 10Km in length.

2004 Cross Country

The cross country season has been very successful, with a large number of Kajaks JDs taking part. We had a number of new athletes joining us for the cross country season. After starting with 3 athletes at the beginning of the season, the younger group training with Peter Cook kept growing! The season finale was a wrap-up party at Watermania, with pizza, drinks and cookies. Congratulations to all who took part.

Many athletes took part in some or all of the JD Series cross country races, which culminated in the JD cross country championships held at White Rock on 23rd October.

Among the Elementary school athletes, Amanda de Faye showed excellent form, winning several races in the series, and finishing 4th at the BC Championships. Jamie Andrews also did very well finishing 4th in the Championships, just beating out David Ling (5th). Cameron Kroeker showed excellent form, finishing 6th in the 11-year old boys category.

Among the High School athletes, Kajaks had four 14 year old girls running. Melisendra Daviel came in 6th, closely followed by Stephanie Santa Cruz in 7th, and Grace Ling in 8th. Paul Hegele and Evan Dunfee, also 14 years old, finished 5th and 8th respectively. Linda Stutz in the 15yr old category has been doing very well all season, and finished in 6th place, behind Brittany Imlach. Jordan Mara beat out Daniel Scowcroft for 5th place in the 15 year old boys category. Daniel has had an excellent season, winning three of four races in the cross country series.

Melisendra Daviel also won the 16-17yr old category of the Lower Mainland Open/Masters Cross Country series for the second year running.

High School Cross Country Series

The high school JD Athletes have also been taking part in the Schools Cross Country Series, culminating in the Provincial Cross Country Championships November 6th.

Some of the athletes who competed in the pre-provincial meet (held 26th September on the same course as the Provincials) are Linda Stutz (14th), Melisendra Daviel (35th), Melanie van Soeren (45th), Grace Ling (46th), Heather Warwick (49th), Stephanie Santa Cruz (57th), Andrew Lee (7th), Jordan Mara (13th), Paul Hegele (19th), Daniel Scowcroft (26th).

BC High School Cross Country Provincial Championships

The BC High School Provincial Cross Country championships took place Nov 6th at Jericho Park under less-than-ideal conditions. It was pouring with rain and very muddy. The boys' and girls' races each had a starting field of about 300 runners. The girls ran 2 laps of the course, and the boys 3 laps.

There were 12 Kajaks athletes taking part, 3 Juvenile athletes in Grade 11 (Jon Kruzeniski, Andrew Lee and August Griffen) and 9 JD athletes in Grades 9 and 10.

Jon Kruzeniski did extremely well, just missing the medals in 4th place in the boys race! He was one of the pre-race favourites, coming off a fine 2nd place finish the previous weekend at the BC Athletics Cross Country Championships. There were 2 other Kajaks runners finishing in the top 25: Brittany Imlach (17th) and August Griffen (22nd). The third Juvenile athlete, Andrew Lee, finished in strongly in 44th place.

Among the JDs, Brittany Imlach (17th) was very impressive, and Jordan Mara (32nd) had a very strong race. Daniel Scowcroft and Paul Hegele both raced very well, finishing in 48th and 58th place respectively. Linda Stutz finished her excellent season with a 50th place finish, and Grace Ling also had a fine race, just finishing outside the top 100 in 109th place.
