September 6/11: Congratulations to Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops, BC on his history-making silver medal in a throwing event at the World Track & Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea.


Asianna Covington

September 2/11: Kajaks athlete, Asianna Covington has been selected as the flag bearer for the Canadian Team at the Commonwealth Youth Games, September 9-11 in Isle-of-Man, GBR. Asianna will be competing in both the Discus and Hammer events. Asianna is currently ranked 1st in Canada in both those events.


August 24/11: Kajaks JDs at the 2011 Kamloops BC Junior Development Championships (PDF)
From July 22-July 24, the Kajaks Junior Development athletes, along with their enthusiastic and committed parents and coaches, attended the Kamloops BC Junior Development Championships 2011, in Kamloops, BC.

July 12/11: OUTSTANDING KAJAKS PERFORMANCES AT CANADIAN JUNIOR NATIONALS

Very few clubs have swept a field event until this year when Kajaks women's hammer throwers set the bar so high it will not be matched for years to come.
The Kajaks hammer throws took 1st, 2nd and 3rd with Joanna Franke Kuhn taking the gold medal, Samantha Kennedy taking the silver and young Asianna Covington taking the bronze.
Another outstanding Kajaks this year was Katie Reid taking the gold medal in the 400m and a bronze in the 200m.
Asianna Covington missed the bronze medal in the women's discus by only 20cm. Shai-Ann Davis finished 4th in the 200m and 6th in the 100m. Hayley Stewart qualified for the finals in the long jump but finished in 9th place in the finals.


July 4/11: Congratulations to Sam Pawluk and Rachel Ruus for their win at the inaugural Kajaks Salmon Festival Mile Run. Sam completed the course in 4:34 and Rachel in 5:24. Good Job!


June 20/11: The Kajaks Masters were a dominating group again at the BC Masters Championship held this past weekend at the McLeod Athletic Park in Langley. Kajaks results (PDF)


June 10/11: Track Rascals summer session starts July 11th for 10 sessions. Monday and Wednesday 6:15 to 7:00pm. Details and registration here


June 6/11: Online registration is now open for the Steveston Kajaks Salmon Festival Mile Run (July 1st).

Trey Henderson 1st men's hammer (68.93m)
Angus Taylor 5th men's hammer (61.41m)

WAC Championships:
Joanna Franke Khun 6th women's hammer (53.17m)

Trey and Angus will represent BC in Calgary this year at the Canadian Championships.

Joanna will represent BC in Manitoba at the Canadian Junior Championships and she also qualified to be a member of the Canadian Pan Am Junior Team.


May 9/11: NEW EVENT: Steveston Kajaks Salmon Festival Mile Run, Friday July 1, 2011. 9:45am start at corner of Chatham St and 7th Avenue, Steveston. Finish at Moncton St and Railway. Certified course, flat and fast. Awards: $250 to top Male and Female finishers, plus draw prizes. Details and registration »

May 8/11: 2011 Richmond Sports Awards, held May 5 at the Senior Centre, Minoru PlaceJJ Schmidt was inducted into the Richmond Sports Hall of Fame in the Builders category. Gwen McFarland and John Winfield were the Masters athletes of the year. Nick Fyffe was High School athlete of the year.

MC was Don Fennell. City officials: Mayor Malcom Brodie, Bill McNulty and Eric Stepura. Kajaks President, Fred Pawluk.

Many thanks to Don Fennell for his constant efforts contributing to the recognition of our athletes and coaches.

April 20/11: Avril Douglas has been inducted into the Canadian Masters Athletics Hall of Fame. The report to the Board referred to her accomplishments as a Masters athlete, including the following:

  • Canadian Championships: Many in 45+, 50+, 55+, 60+
  • Canadian Records: In 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, and Mile
  • Long-standing Canadian Records: W45 200m since 1993, W55 400m since 2001.
  • International Championships: WAVA 1993 silver 800m, bronze 400m.
  • USATF Championships: Many "guest" golds.
  • World Records: 200m and 400m at Canadian Championships in 2001
  • Highest Age Graded %: 93.85%.
  • Highlights: In W50 setting Canadian Records in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m in one season.
    Avril added the Mile record the next year.

April 18/11: New Canadian Record for Krista Woodward — Krista Woodward set a new Canadian record today in Walnut, California at the Mt SAC Relays. She won the javelin event in a new meet record of 58.64m besting the current record set by Elizabeth Gleadle in 2009 of 58.21m. full story on BCA blog

April 4/11: Kajaks Junior Development outdoor practices start Tuesday, April 5th at Minoru Track in Richmond, and continue every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30pm. More details here

March 24/11: Kajaks results at the Canadian Masters Indoor T&F Championships in Kamloops, March 19-20 2011. Incredible performances by our Masters in the National Championship. 9 athletes participated. They collected 18 Gold, 4 Silver and 2 Bronze. Congratulations!

January 21/11: The Kajaks Track & Field JD Program will kick off their indoor training session on Tuesday, January 25th at Brighouse School Gym.

The indoor sessions will take place on Tuesdays and Thursday from 6 to 7:30 pm.
